‘Tis the Season to Bring Cheer to Hundreds of Anchorage Kids

The holidays should be filled with love and presents underneath the tree, but unfortunately for hundreds of homeless and in-need children across Anchorage, Christmas is a difficult time.

The Anchorage Home Builders Association’s annual Shoebox Program ensures hundreds of Anchorage children have at least one gift to open. Thanks to the donation of time and money from its members, AHBA was able to give more than 1,450 students gifts this holiday season.

AHBA works with the Anchorage School District to identify students in need. The students range in age from 4 to 13, and many are living in shelters. On December 10, AHBA volunteers spent an evening at Walmart shopping for these students. Volunteers purchased gifts including toys, clothing and toiletries.

On December 17, AHBA held a backpack stuffing party where teams of volunteers filled more than 200 backpacks with gifts. ASD picked up the backpacks the following day and distributed them to the children before holiday break.

AHBA has been involved in the Shoebox Program since 2002. This program would not be possible without the generosity of our friends and members. We are extremely grateful for the support we receive in helping us make Christmas a little brighter for kids across our community.
